The rules of the contest were simple: nominate your favorite local IPA by describing it in four words starting with T-A-C-O.

Anyone who read the 20-or-so entries we received for The People’s Tap would quickly understand that the Tantalizing Alternative Cola Option (Meghan Finley) has got to be Tasty, Awesome, Crisp, Over-the-top hops (Jessica Moseley) of Georgetown Brewing’s Lucille IPA. Annie Moore believes that it’ll be a Tasty Ale Consumed Often, and we couldn’t agree more.

It’s a Terrific Ale Consumed Oceanside (Melissa Anderson)…How could we pass that up?

We’re totally psyched to bring in Georgetown Brewing’s Lucille IPA for our first ever The People’s tap! It’s Totally Alki’s Choice, Obviously! (Melissa Anderson)

Hello America!

(that’s what I call everyone who comes to Marination. I know we have customers from all over, but when you’re here, you are America!).

I cannot wait for ma kai to open its doors. I will be standing HERE (points to where I will be standing) and I will be smiling ear to ear, dancing, singing, and taking your orders for delicious food. Will I hold your baby? It is a possibility if you ask. Sometimes you need two hands to devour a slider or two.

I don’t know if I am more excited for the new view (have you seen it???), the new faces, or the new items on the menu. (Shhhh! The menu is still secret squirrel.) Actually, I think I am most excited to see faces of people that I *do* know. You make me excited on a daily basis to try and be the best order taker this side of the Mississippi. If there is ever a “Top Order Taker” reality show, you can bet your sweet bippy I will be on it.

Get your party shoes, your fancy earrings, and your appetites ready! I can’t wait to see all of your smiling faces at marination ma kai.

Hey there, Marination Nation! I’m Robyn, and I’ll be your resident Cicerone at Marination ma kai. You’ve never heard of a Cicerone? That’s okay. All you need to know is that I love some good beer and have a compulsive need to share that love with others. Like many of you, I’m beyond excited to be a part of the ma kai family. You and I, we’ve waited patiently for the opening, roughing many days of delayed gratification, dreaming of tacos, beers, shave ice and beautiful views of the city. We all have our own way of dealing with that “child waiting for Santa to finally come” feeling. Me, I taste beers. Lots of beers. I go to bottle shops, breweries, pubs, corner stores…you get the picture. It’s tough. Since I can’t yet physically share the fun beers I’ve been tasting, I thought I’d at least let you know what kind of beer mood I’m in. When ma kai opens…SOON! YAY!…we’ll be able to have these conversations together. That will be fun. You can tell me your beer mood and I’ll tell you mine. But I digress… Since the weather right now is soooo beautiful, I’m still enjoying my frothy, crisp and oh so refreshing German pilsners. Have you ever pointed the bottom of your pilsner glass towards the sun and looked up through the glass while taking a big gulp? It’s a fantastic view. What’s confusing right now is that despite the lovely sunshine, the leaves are looking just a bit less green, collegiate lined paper is on sale, and evenings have the slightest hint of a chill. We all know what this means. Fall. It’s coming folks. How do we deal? Pumpkin beers! Yes, I’ve been rotating a few pumpkin beers in with my German pilsners. They only come once a year so despite the warm summer weather, I have to get my fill while they’re still available. In fact, this weekend I picked up a growler of Beer Valley Jackalope Pumpkin Porter and a four-pack of Dogfish Head Punkin Ale from the most awesome of all bottle shops, The Beer Junction on California Avenue. (Can I tell you how excited I am to have the Beer Junction as our West Seattle neighbors? Really excited.) There are lots of tasty pumpkin ales from local brewers, too. If you’re interested in saturating yourself with all things pumpkin and beer, check out Elysian’s Great Pumpkin Beer Festival in October. See that shiny silver top? We have a hood! It's so pretty we're worried Santa might try to squeeze through someday.

We have a floor! We have a floor! Between the functional bathroom, and the wonderful floor for standing upon, it’s starting to feel like the real thing over here on Alki. We’ve done some other fun stuff — like cut the openings for NEW BIG WINDOWS. And we’ve done some not-so-fun stuff, like wait and watch, wait and watch, while our roof is still not complete. Blarrghghghgh.

Plumbing is plum finished. Finito. Fin. We have water that runs and toilets that flush. We speak for all of our construction guys when we say WOOOOO!
New concrete floor is poured! If you’ve ever been in a situation that needed concrete poured, you know how exciting this is.
NEW WALLS are about 85% framed (pics to follow)! Soon enough we’ll have a REAL dishpit, a REAL kitchen, and a REAL BAR. Yesssss.
Parks department is tearing off the roof as we speak. There are few windows in time & space where you can tear a roof off of a Seattle structure, and we can’t help but feel like someone, somewhere, is looking out for us with this awesome tear-that-roof-off weather. THANK YOU, Watcher Over-er.

It's just never ever a bad view.

Construction update: The concrete floor at ma kai is cut up to make room for plumbing, and preparations were made to strengthen some of the walls in the space so they don’t come a’tumblin down upon our beers. Hopefully the trenches will get filled in this week, and then the new walls will go up (!!), floor will be finished (!!), and electrical work will begin! And we are that much closer to making this dream a reality, friends!

We had a setback. Insert BIGGEST EVER frown face here.

It only put us back about a week though, so we’re still shooting for an early September opening. Indian summer on the patio with beers!

In the meantime, please enjoy this picture taken at the end of Week 2, last friday 7/20, from the doorway looking in. Note the wall that is no longer there (woo!), and imagine a kitchen and a counter going into the open space. And imagine that you are ordering some kimchi fried rice and waving to your pals who are headed to an outside table and they will save a seat for you. It’s gonna be great!!

Lots of speculation going on out there! We’re still working on the menu, and there will definitely be delicious morning coffee every day, and the staples from our other menus that you know and love, but we’re not likely to add any Portuguese delights to our Hawaiian/Korean fare. Which doesn’t mean there won’t be morning treats! We love treats. All times of day. And we love Portuguese treats! But we are much better at eating them than we are making them! =)

The big, top picture is current exterior. She’s getting a wee facelift before we’re done with her.

Bottom left picture is standing in doorway looking to where a counter and a kitchen will soon be open for biz! That wall framing? She’s acomin’ down!

Bottom right pic is soon to be home to an epic patio where beer will flow, kids will run, and every sunny day will feel like Aloha Friday.
